Tapping Into Hidden Superpowers: Unleash The Extraordinary Within
By Rudy Gaskins, November 5, 2023
The formation of the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS) was an opportunity to create an organization that embodies and nurtures a welcoming haven for the global community of voice actors and the essential professionals – producers, creators, talent agents, casting directors, engineers, writers, and more – who make up the voiceover ecosystem. In doing so, we set a mission that would guide SOVAS like a North Star: one that radiates diversity, inclusiveness, and a strong commitment to humanitarianism. This was not a choice made lightly, for we recognized the turbulent waters we were entering.
As we gaze upon the global community that has joined our cause over the past 10 years, we are reminded of the challenge of maintaining a hopeful perspective in the face of worldwide conflict and suffering. Here, we offer guiding principles that individuals and the global community can embrace and act upon to help shape a brighter tomorrow. These principles unveil the true superpowers that reside within each of us.
1. Mindfulness: Cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness. By being present and attuned to the suffering in the world, we can respond with wisdom and kindness.
2. Activism and Advocacy: Take action to promote peace, humanitarian aid, and conflict resolution. Engaging in advocacy, supporting organizations working for peace, and participating in efforts to alleviate suffering can make a significant impact.
3. Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about the root causes of conflicts and suffering. Knowledge and understanding are essential for informed decision-making and empathy.
4. Unity and Solidarity: Recognize that we are part of a global community. Strive to foster unity and solidarity among people of all backgrounds and beliefs, emphasizing our shared humanity.
5. Spiritual Practices: Engage in spiritual practices that promote inner peace, resilience, and a sense of purpose. This can include meditation, prayer, or mindfulness techniques.

6. Resilience: Understand that adversity and suffering are part of the human experience. Develop resilience and coping mechanisms to navigate challenging times while maintaining hope for a better future.
7. Non-violent Communication: Promote non-violent communication and conflict resolution techniques. Encourage dialogue and negotiation as alternatives to violence.
8. Human Rights and Justice: Advocate for human rights and social justice on a global scale. Work towards creating a world where the basic rights and dignity of all individuals are upheld.
9. Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue: Support interfaith and intercultural dialogues that promote understanding and cooperation among different belief systems. Encourage the celebration of diverse cultures and traditions.
10. Environmental Sustainability: Recognize the link between environmental degradation and conflict. Promote sustainable practices to address the root causes of many conflicts, such as resource scarcity.
11. Hope and Vision: Maintain a vision of a more peaceful and just world. Hold onto hope and work towards a brighter future, even in the face of immense challenges.
These principles resonate with the values held by many spiritual and philosophical traditions, teachers, and healers. The key is to combine these principles with practical actions and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Remember that change often starts at the individual level, and when individuals come together with a shared vision, they can create a global community that strives for peace, compassion, and solidarity.
