The Future Is Human: Performance, Not Perfection,
Is the Key to Global Voice Work

By Fannie Brett and Max Rabault, 6/13/2025

One Task at a Time: Empowering the Actor’s Craft

It is important that actors focus on a single, sacred task: performing.

In voiceover and dubbing work, asking an actor to monitor recording levels, troubleshoot technical issues, or navigate unfamiliar software often leads to distraction and reduced artistic focus.

Actors should be able to concentrate fully on performance, while technical aspects are handled by the production team.

Thanks to Maxime Rabault, a streamlined recording system was developed to prioritize performance. Actors receive only two links: the actor simply needs to use Chrome and open one video link and one audio link provided by the production team. The director’s voice will be transmitted directly to the actor’s headphones, while the actor’s voice will be sent in real time to the sound engineer’s speakers. This live setup eliminates the need for complex recording software on the actor’s side, ensuring consistent, high-quality audio on both ends, no matter where in the world the actors are located.

As long as a professional-grade home booth is in place and audio quality is consistent, recording can be managed remotely and efficiently. This allows actors to remain immersed in their roles without technical interference.

Technology can serve the performance, rather than distract from it.

A Stand for Human Voices in an AI-Driven Era

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival (annecyfestival.com), in June, reaffirmed an essential truth: human voices are irreplaceable.

Creators from over 118 countries expressed a shared belief that AI-generated voices lack the warmth, subtlety, and emotional nuance that only human performers can offer.

What AI cannot imitate is the lived experience behind a voice. It is the invisible reservoir of memory, instinct, and vulnerability that gives every human performance its soul. When an actor channels the grief of losing a parent or the quiet strength of overcoming hardship, that emotion resonates because it is real. No algorithm can summon the tremble in a voice shaped by love, fear, joy, or loss.

It is critical to maintain a commitment to human voices, even for smaller roles or age transitions. While AI may mimic sound, it cannot replicate emotional texture. Storytelling deserves authentic emotion.

Fannie and Max light up the stage at That’s Voiceover!, turning the power of performance into a masterclass for hundreds of voice actors.

Creative Direction, Vision, and Purpose

The heart of our jobs, mine as an actor and director, and Max’s as an engineer and inventor, is to provide vital creative insight into the stories being told and their purpose.

It is essential to recognize that this work extends beyond technical execution. It carries meaning, imagination, and responsibility. Particularly in children’s content, there is a powerful opportunity to shape perspectives and nurture creativity.
_
In a world increasingly mediated by screens and synthetic interactions, children need real human-to-human experiences more than ever. These interactions are where empathy is born, where values are modeled, and where imagination is sparked through genuine connection. Without them, we risk becoming less human in the way we treat one another, and in doing so, we weaken the very fabric of our evolution as a species.

Projects should aim to inspire the imagination and stir emotion through carefully crafted, intentional storytelling.

Accessible Studios, Empowered Creators

Since the pandemic, many actors have invested in home studios. With modest upfront monetary investment, it is now possible to build a high-quality setup.

A world-class sound can be achieved with the right microphone, a solid interface, and effective acoustic treatment.
_
Actors are encouraged to become self-sufficient, not just in performing but also as producers and content creators. Yet amid all the tools and technology, the actor’s primary focus must remain on performance. This is not in opposition to technology but rather a powerful throughline, a way to connect with the human spirit in its most meaningful and enduring form.

A compelling short-form story, narrated book, or mini-series can begin with a simple home setup and a strong idea.

Creative ownership allows performers to share their stories with the world.

Under Fannie’s expert direction, six eager voice actors dive into the art of live dubbing, turning training into performance in real time.

The Responsibility of Storytelling in A Digital Age

In a world where children are constantly exposed to screens, it is important to provide content that is emotionally enriching, educational, and thoughtfully crafted.

Human voices add emotional depth and authenticity that algorithms cannot match. Real voices carry values, empathy, and connection.

And it is not just children who need this kind of nourishment. Adults also require stories and communication that awaken their humanity. The stakes are even higher for them because the consequences of their choices shape our societies, our policies, and our survival. If the interpreters at the United Nations were unable to capture the meaning and nuance of human speech, it could mean the difference between peace and annihilation. The ability to feel, to listen, and to respond with emotional intelligence is not a luxury. It is a global imperative.

The tools now exist. The networks are available. Most importantly, human voices remain powerful and essential. We are the voices.
