Life and career can often feel like a complicated maze, and it’s easy to lose our way. But here’s the thing: self-reflection is like a trusty flashlight, helping us navigate the twists and turns of our journey. It’s through this process that we can uncover our life’s purpose, set meaningful goals, and leave a lasting legacy. For these reasons, I want to explore how taking a moment to think about what’s next in our development can lead to spiritual enlightenment and a more fulfilling life.

 

Discovering Spiritual Enlightenment

Self-reflection isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way to connect with your inner self and find meaning in life. As Eckhart Tolle wisely put it, “The most important journey you will take in life is the journey within.” It’s during these quiet moments of introspection that we can tap into a higher level of awareness and begin to understand who we truly are.

 

Defining Your Life’s Purpose

One of the major benefits of self-reflection is figuring out your life’s purpose. Viktor E. Frankl, who survived the Holocaust and was a respected psychiatrist, said, “Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.” When we take the time to ask ourselves questions like, “What really matters to me?” and “What kind of impact do I want to have?” we start a conversation with our inner selves. This dialogue often reveals our unique purpose, which can get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Embracing this purpose can lead to a sense of fulfillment and spiritual enlightenment, as our actions align with our deepest values.

 

Setting Meaningful Goals

Once you’ve got a handle on your purpose, self-reflection empowers you to set goals that actually matter. The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu couldn’t have been more accurate when he said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Self-reflection helps you take that all-important first step toward your dreams.

Spiritually grounded goals have a special kind of power. They keep you going, even when times get tough. When your goals align with your purpose and values, you’re more likely to stay motivated and resilient in the face of challenges.

Shaping Your Legacy

Legacy isn’t just about what you leave behind in terms of money or possessions. It’s about the impact you have on others and the world. Maya Angelou captured this beautifully with her words, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Self-reflection encourages you to think about the legacy you want to create. It prompts you to consider how your actions, choices, and interactions with others contribute to the greater good. By continually assessing whether your actions are in line with your spiritual values and purpose, you can shape a legacy that inspires and uplifts generations to come.

In a nutshell, the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences seeks to encourage self-reflection as your trusty compass on the journey of life, and of course, career. We have created a new stage for members and advocates of the voice acting community to share how the self-reflection on the question of “What’s Next?” has led them to creating a life that they love. SOVAS NXT our short talks, presentation if you will, by real people from the voice acting community designed to help you find your purpose, set meaningful goals, and create a legacy that stands the test of time. As you embrace the practice of self-reflection, you embark on a transformative journey.  You become the architect of your destiny and the creator of a meaningful legacy.

To quote Rumi, the famous Sufi mystic, “Let yourself be silently drawn by the pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” SOVAS NXT will guide you toward what you truly love, leading you to your highest purpose and a legacy that leaves a positive mark on the world. The first such installment will be presented by Paul Cartwright during the That’s Voiceover Career Expo 2023, a 3-day conference about how one creates and sustains a successful career in voice acting – the craft, the business, and the journey.
