The Surprising Truth: You Don’t Need Perfect English
When people hear that I work with international clients as a Japanese voice artist, they often assume I must be recording in English. In reality, most of my work is actually in Japanese, but for clients outside of Japan.
Global businesses, media companies, museums, streaming services, and production studios regularly need professional Japanese voiceovers to localize their content and connect authentically with Japanese audiences. Occasionally, I also provide English voiceover work when a natural Japanese accent is specifically requested for cultural authenticity.
Many non-native voice artists believe that unless they speak perfect English, international work is out of reach. I once thought that way, too. My career began as a TV announcer in Japan, where my world was entirely domestic. But as global communication expanded, I realized that my language and cultural background were not obstacles. They were valuable assets.

The Power of Authentic Localization
Global companies are realizing that localization is far more than simply translating words. Authentic voiceover requires cultural nuance, natural rhythm, and emotional connection. Native voice artists are essential in helping brands connect with audiences in ways that feel genuine and trustworthy.
You don’t need to sound like a native speaker of a second language. What matters most is your ability to deliver emotion, clarity, and cultural authenticity. That’s what makes your voice irreplaceable.

The Challenges of Stepping into Global Markets
Of course, entering the international voiceover world comes with challenges. There are new business practices, unfamiliar contracts, cultural differences, and language barriers when communicating with foreign clients. It can feel overwhelming, especially without an international network.
I experienced this isolation myself. I often wondered:
What rates should I charge? How do I handle contracts? Am I even qualified to compete globally? And most of all — where do I start?

Creating a Path for Others
This is exactly why I founded Voiceover Japan. I wanted to share what I had learned and provide guidance for Japanese voice artists who dreamed of working globally but didn’t know how to begin. Since its launch, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring over 250 talented artists who are now booking international projects, Some even earning Voice Arts® Awards nominations and wins.
What I’ve discovered is that success doesn’t depend on flawless English or the longest list of credits. Instead, those who thrive internationally share a few key traits: curiosity, humility, lifelong learning, and most importantly, a mindset of collaboration.
While Voiceover Japan focuses on helping Japanese voice artists enter the international voiceover market, my newer project, Global Gateway Japan, serves a different but complementary purpose.

A Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
One of the biggest breakthroughs I see in voice artists who succeed internationally is a simple mindset shift:
From “I’m not good enough” → To “How can I serve?”
From “There’s not enough work” → To “How can I create opportunities for others, too?”
When you approach your career with this mindset, you not only grow professionally, but also build a global network of collaborators, friends, and supporters who genuinely want to see you succeed.

A New Chapter: Global Gateway Japan
Global Gateway Japan connects internationally recognized English-speaking voice artists, including Voice Arts® Awards nominees and winners, with Japanese entrepreneurs and business leaders who are preparing to expand into global markets.
Many of these Japanese business owners dream of introducing their companies and products in English using their own voice, but face challenges due to limited English proficiency and a lack of confidence in their delivery. They don’t want someone else to speak for them; they want to communicate their vision personally and authentically.
That’s where English voice artists play a unique role. Rather than providing direct language coaching, the voice artists record professional model readings of the business leaders’ scripts, demonstrating natural pacing, pronunciation, and delivery. These high-quality reference recordings serve as a vocal blueprint for the entrepreneurs, who then practice and refine their own performance.
As the program lead, I work directly with these entrepreneurs, using the model voiceovers to guide them in improving their spoken English presentation skills, helping them build confidence, clarity, and international presence.
Although Global Gateway Japan was originally scheduled to launch this fall, growing interest from Japanese business leaders has led me to begin offering services ahead of schedule.
This system creates new opportunities for English voice artists while empowering Japanese entrepreneurs to confidently represent their businesses on the global stage.

Giving Back to the Community That Helped Me
For me, this is also a way to give back to the voiceover community that has supported my own journey. I’ve been fortunate to receive guidance, encouragement, and trust from mentors and colleagues worldwide. Now, I feel a responsibility to help others step into the global market with confidence, and I’m grateful to be part of a global community like SOVAS that continually inspires and connects voice artists around the world.
The global voiceover industry is full of possibilities. And there is room for all of us. ♦♦♦
